Volunteer Profile: Lynn Frederick Hawley
Assistant Director of Mt. Sinai’s Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention
Program Project at the Alliance: Lynn participated in the Alliance’s first ever
Outreach Committee for the survivor survey and also participated in our Event
Planning Committee. Lynn will be leading
the next Outreach Committee this October and November. Lynn has been an enthusiastic leader and has
been instrumental in spreading the word about the survivor survey and other
Alliance projects.
What did you want to volunteer at the Alliance? “I
had put some time/distance between myself and rape crisis work, and I felt a
need to get back to it when I had some availability to volunteer in the
city. As I was considering my volunteer
options I received the e-alert about the survey committee, which was a perfect
fit in terms of my interests (research, outcome measurement, survivor
empowerment and program/training development) and skills (outreach,
organizing).”
What did you gain from your experience interning at the
Alliance? “I had the opportunity to refresh for myself why I am passionate
about anti-sexual violence work, be reminded of what I want to be doing
professionally, be a part of a unique effort in terms of the survivor survey,
and meet some truly dedicated and genuinely interesting people as a bonus. I also got to do some unique things I maybe
wouldn’t have done otherwise: attend an event at the Museum of Sex, meet the
editor of Altar Magazine, participate in the Barrier Free Justice Conference in
Brooklyn, get to see Mad Hot Ballroom in the middle of the afternoon….I would
highly recommend volunteering at the Alliance.”
What do you hope to pursue in the future? “Professionally
I’ve done enough pursuing for the time being.
I’m really looking forward to beginning my work with Mt. Sinai. Academically?
Down the line I’ve always assumed I’ll pursue my doctorate.”
