Sexual and Dating Violence in the Lives of NYC YouthThe Alliance in partnership with Columbia University Center for Youth Violence Prevention has conducted a quantitative study of students at four NYC high schools to learn about their experiences with sexual and dating violence. The goals of this study are to establish baseline data on the prevalence and nature of sexual and dating violence in New York City area schools, including information on perpetration of sexual and dating violence, disclosure of violence, the degree of association with exposure to community violence and the degree of mutual participation in partner violence with the aim of developing effective intervention and prevention programs for youth.BackgroundResearch shows that teens 16 to 19 years old are three and a half times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. According to the Youth Risk Behavioral Survey for NYC, 28,300 public high school students have experienced physical dating violence within the past year (53% female) and 21,100 have experienced forced sex within the past year (64%) female. These findings reveal a heightened risk for sexual victimization among adolescents and young adults and elucidate the need for prevention and intervention efforts directed at youth. |
