DNA InitiativeIn the wake of a sexual assault, clinicians must provide both medical and forensic care. Eventually, DNA evidence and examination notes can be used by the criminal justice system, and there currently exists a critical need to ensure that clinicians optimize DNA evidence collection and examination documentation.Upon receiving a grant from the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS), the Health and Forensic Services Project (HFSP) at the Alliance, through collaboration with the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA), has sought to improve evidence collection in sexual assault cases. The DNA Initiative, funded by this NYS DCJS grant, calls for HFSP's technical and logistical support for the didactic and clinical training and preceptorship of NYC clinicians, SAFE program administrators, and emergency department administrators. The initiative aims to ensure that clinicians lacking adequate resources receive specialized training and support in both the medical and the forensic care of sexual assault patients.
