Volunteer Profile: Emma Basch
Currently a Senior at Washington University in St. Louis pursuing a BA in PsychologyProject at the Alliance: Emma conducted a research study to identify the theoretical and intervention preferences of rape crisis counselors and service providers throughout the city. With the study, the Alliance hoped to gain a better understanding of the interests, training, and needs of counselors in New York City. Emma conducted this study using a survey containing sixteen questions. The survey was distributed to eleven hospital-based rape crisis programs, and three community based programs. In addition, Emma conducted face-to-face in depth interviews with 8 counselors. These interviews were conducted to gather more in depth information about the preferences and needs of rape crisis counselors.
What did you want to volunteer at the Alliance? “I wanted to volunteer at the Alliance because I wanted to incorporate my two passions: psychology and women’s studies. The research internship allowed me to pursue both and commit myself to a cause I care a lot about.”
What did you gain from your experience interning at the Alliance? “My experience was so meaningful because it confirmed my interests in psychology and made me feel confident enough to apply to graduate school right away. Also, I learned such an incredible amount about research and therapy and that is so invaluable. It was the most amazing summer. I am forever grateful for the experience and would encourage anyone and everyone to work at the Alliance”
What do you hope to pursue in the future? “I am
currently applying for a PhD or a PsyD in clinical psychology and plan to work
first in a social services agency that addresses women’s issues, and then open
a practice that works specifically with adolescent women.”
