Policy Statement: Safety Implications of Metropolitan Transit Authority Subway Personnel Changes

In recent months many changes have been proposed by the MTA regarding staffing changes on the subway. The proposed changes would increase the risk for travelers as token booth attendants and subway conductors are eliminated as part of proposed budget cuts in the fiscal year of 2006. The proposal would remove or reduce the hours of staff at 87 token booths located on various subway lines. The proposal would also remove 313 conductors from the 7, J, M, and N Lines.

Due to the hard work of the Coalition to Keep Token Booths Open, the MTA has not succeeded in its proposal to eliminate staff or reduce staffing hours of token booths. The Alliance is thankful that token booths will remain open as it is a reality that sexual assaults can and do occur on the subway.

The Alliance believes that individuals deserve to feel safe and protected when utilizing public transportation. Keeping subway token booths open and staffed will prevent some crimes. The Alliance recognizes that sexual assaults can and do occur in subway stations and advocates for all safety and precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent such crimes.
