[1] About "NOT IN OUR CITY" | Past Events

NOT IN OUR CITY seeks to change the cultural norms and values that maintain the Culture of Rape. Take a look at the following steps NOT IN OUR CITY members are taking toward a plan of action!
Change can only happen once we recognize how our culture promotes sexual violence. We started to answer this question in the first of three meetings on the Culture of Rape.
JOIN US OCTOBER 17TH, 2006 @ THE ALLIANCE FOR MEETING # 2
1) NOT IN OUR CITY began this dialogue in August by discussing the following questions:
Is the word NO enough to stop rape?
Where do rapists come from?
Is acquaintance rape the result of miscommunication?
2) Join us as we identify behaviors that maintain and reinforce the structure of Rape Culture:
Do perpetrators always know it is wrong?
Where does entitlement/arrogance/lack of empathy come from?
How can we hold men accountable for rape?
What is the relationship between power and rape?
3) November’s meeting will wrap up the discussion with the last three questions to be determined from October’s meeting. After reflecting on all of our complied notes and ideas, NOT IN OUR CITY activists will identify a specific community issue they would like to work on in NYC.
4) In January NOT IN OUR CITY members will have the opportunity to attend training "Community Organizing for Prevention." This workshop will help us launch our idea off the ground.
5) February will be our strategy meeting. The agenda will include:
- identify an activism campaign
- choose an action field or arenas for activism (i.e. youth, media)
- develop objectives
- develop strategies
- identify training (if needed)

Hold newspapers accountable for the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of sexual assault in mainstream media. NOT IN OUR CITY and Take Back the News have teamed up to address the way newspapers report sexual assaults by developing a NYC Media Response Project that will write a letter to the editor anytime there is a news article that misrepresents a sexual assault. Make your voice heard and join the NYC Media Response Project. Click here to see the [2] NYC Media Response Project Volunteer Guidebook! [pdf]
ROCK THE MIC AGAINST RAPE! “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell. Each time we raise our mic against rape and tell the truth about sexual violence, we are performing a revolutionary act!! Help plan the next ROCKIN’ THE MIC AGAINST RAPE event!
