The time is ripe for change. Sexual violence is in the news as never before. The perception of violence against women has shifted, and it is now discussed as a human rights crisis. It's time for our splintered responses to become unified. While we must stay the course in our current activities, we must also do more. We must put aside our differences. We must become a movement. [9] Katrina, Natural Disasters, and Sexual Violence : [10] Why does rape occur in the aftermath of natural disasters and other humanitarian crises?
Rape and violence against women in the aftermath of humanitarian disasters is no new problem. Internationally, rape in refugee situations has become quite common. According to the Human Rights Watch document "Sexual Violence Against Refugees: Guidelines on Prevention and Response", there are several causes or circumstances which allow sexual attacks to take place. The Alliance would like to say a big Thank You to all our Summer 2005 volunteers and interns! We rely on several volunteers and interns to assist with our ongoing projects and we are always delighted to see the enthusiasm and commitment these volunteers bring to ending sexual violence in NYC. Many of our volunteers and interns want to continue their studies and possibly pursue a future career in sexual violence intervention and prevention. [[13] more]

[18] Food for Thought : [19] Does the Violence Against Women Movement Address the Needs of All Survivors of Sexual Violence?
Women and girls are disproportionately affected by violence. They are disproportionately affected by intimate partner (IPV) and sexual violence. However, women and girls are not the sole subjects of gender-based victimization. We know that men and boys can be victims of IPV and sexual violence, and these forms of violence affect people in same-sex relationships and in a variety of forms. Within the Violence Against Women (VAW) analysis, is there is ample room to address sexual and partner violence perpetrated against men and boys? [[20] more]
