Newsletter: January 2004: Quarterly Meeting Review

The Alliance kicked off our fall quarterly meeting with the good news that much of the legislation we have been fighting to create for the past three to five years was passed over the summer. Faced with creating a new legislative agenda for future work, topics were solicited as we form new priorities for Alliance advocacy. Participants reported that undocumented survivors are facing fear of extradition when they report. Several of these topics are discussed in the Policy News section of this issue, including legislation to extend or remove the statute of limitations in cases with DNA evidence. .

Our guest speaker for the fall meeting was Ije Ude, New York City Community Organizer for Generation Five. Ms. Ude described the organization’s new Community Response Project (CRP), which is currently recruiting and screening participants for their intensive, year long leadership training to stop child sexual abuse through community action. The ideal candidate for the CRP is a leader and team player who is open to Generation Five’s framework for change, comfortable working in a diverse group and able to address community offender management. There are also other opportunities besides the CRP for individuals to get involved in this effort. Ms. Ude can be reached at (917) 673-8378, or visit www.generationfive.org to learn more.
