Newsletter: July 2003: Rape Crisis Training Institute Review

By [1] Amy Nystrom

It has been an exciting year for the Rape Crisis Training Institute. Our four offerings were well attended and the feedback from participants overwhelmingly positive.

In the advanced clinical workshop, "What Trauma Therapists Should Know About Panic, Phobia, and OCD: A One Day Guide to Diagnosis and Integrative Treatment" Dr. Sally Winston, Co-Director of the Anxiety & Stress Disorders Institute of Maryland, shared her experience and expert knowledge of integrative treatment principles with rape crisis clinicians.

In the area of prevention education, School Safety Professionals shared their expertise in our "Go to the Principal's Office: Challenges in Marketing Rape Prevention to Schools and How to Overcome Them" workshop. School Safety Professionals provided useful information on approaching school administrators, and provided creative activities where participants refined their plans of action to gain access to schools.

Our last two workshops, which were held at the Annual Rape Crisis Grantee Meeting in Albany, covered material on making rape crisis centers more accessible to all rape survivors. Both workshops contributed to the theme of the Grantee Meeting: increased access to rape crisis programs for underserved populations. Juhu Thukral of the Urban Justice Center spoke about the needs of sex workers and victims of trafficking in the sex trade, while the Bronx Independent Living Services presented on accommodating survivors with disabilities.

Finally, we were pleased to present our first ever training for rape crisis advocates. This workshop, "Supporting Chronic Mentally Ill Survivors," dealt with how to identify a survivor who is suffering from a chronic mental illness and how to best aid them. It was presented by Dr. Rachelle Kammer of the New York City Mental Health Association. The topic was selected after surveying advocates from across the city, and the workshop brought over 60 advocates from over a dozen programs together to share their experiences.

The Rape Crisis Training Institute is currently planning its 2004 series. Any recommendations for topics, and for specific presenters, are welcome.
