Preventing sexual violence requires public awareness and involvement. The Alliance is working with the City Council to create a forum on sexual violence for Council Members to encourage leadership and action to end sexual assault in NYC.
The event will take place on April 9th in the Chambers at City Hall, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.
A community response to sexual assault can help prevent the abuse from occurring and provide an alternative sense of justice for survivors. Public awareness campaigns, equitable access to treatment programs throughout the city, information on incidence and prevalence of sexual violence in NYC, and unified efforts to increase school safety are some of the goals that the anti-sexual violence movement will share with Council Members at the forum.
Susan Xenarios, Director of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt’s Crime Victims Treatment Center will talk about the work and value of sexual assault treatment programs. Jacqueline Winston, Director of Safe Horizon’s Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center will discuss the innovative approaches of identifying and treating child sexual abuse. The Reverend Emma Jordon Simpson, Executive Director of Girls Inc. New York City will speak about school safety. Rev. Simpson will be joined by a student from the NYC public schools.
The forum will be sponsored by City Council Speaker Gifford Miller and Council Members Christine Quinn, Chair of the Health Committee, Tracy Boyland, Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee, Eva Moskowitz, Chair of the Education Committee, and Yvette Clark and Diana Reyna, Co-chairs of the Women’s Caucus. The Alliance is proud to be involved in this groundbreaking event. If you are interested in attending, please contact us at (212) 523-4344.
