Sexual Assault Examiner Trainings
In September the FHP held its fall core 5-day Sexual Assault Examiner training at Beth Israel Medical and St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Centers. The course was well attended and included presenters from the New York Civil Liberties Union, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, SAE Programs, NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The FHP would like to thank all of the presenters for contributing to the success of the training, and the hospitals for hosting the training.
The FHP currently offers the SAE course twice a year. The next course will be held in late March / early April. Registration information will be posted in the FHP section on the Alliance website as confirmed.
Advanced Leadership Seminars
In December, the FHP held its Advanced Leadership Seminar “Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault”. The seminar provided an overview of drug-facilitated sexual assault, case presentations, description and identifying factors of substances and prosecutorial issues. Record numbers of participants were present, attesting to the interest in the treatment and prosecution of these cases. Speakers included Marc A. LeBeau, Chemistry Unit Chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Susan Kennedy from the American Prosecutor’s Research Institute, Dr. Lorraine Giordano from St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center and Dr. Marina Stajic from the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Additional Advanced Leadership Seminars will be held in the spring. Information will be posted on the website as it becomes available.
The Criminal Justice Collaboration Project
In the belief that Sexual Assault Treatment Programs must collaborate with other systems interacting with victims of sexual assault to provide the highest level of care, the goal of the CJCP is to create a forum where parties from sexual assault treatment programs can meet regularly with representatives from the criminal justice system to discuss common issues and concerns, identify areas of existing need, and problem solve.
Efforts are underway to facilitate these forums on both borough-wide and city-wide levels. A conference to review trends in sexual assault treatment and response is planned for late April. Information about upcoming activities and opportunities to participate will be available shortly.
The Operations, Standards and Training Committee
The purpose of this committee is to provide opportunities for established Sexual Assault Examiner program staff to work with each other to review progress on a citywide level; develop and discuss standards of care and protocols; discuss future topics for trainings; course improvement for the SAE core 5-day course; deal with operational issues; and provide opportunities for problem solving and resource sharing between programs.
This committee meets quarterly. For meeting information please contact Suzanne Towns, Director, Forensic Healthcare Program at 212-523-5164.
Ms. Towns is the former Director of the Forensic Healthcare Program at The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault. [[2] more]
