It is clear that a public response is needed to change the media's misrepresentation of sexual violence as isolated incidents by strangers, instead of a public health epidemic largely perpetrated by people the victims know.

Join a dedicated team of media activists to correct the myths about sexual violence that the media continues to disseminate.

Media activism, such as sending a Letter to the Editor, corresponding directly with journalists, and writing Op-Ed pieces can change how our society understands the scope and nature of sexual violence.

As a Media Response Project activist, you can make a tangible difference.

Your letters will be coordinated with others to create a critical mass of action - and results. The NYC Media Response Project evaluates progress on a regular basis. The results of your work will be documented, which, we hope, will create a ripple effect among the city's journalists, editors and producers. Activists have already sent hundreds of letters in the last year, serving as media watchdogs who spread the truth about sexual violence, one reporter at a time.

In addition to serving as an individual media monitor, you will also be part of a community of like-minded activists:

The MRP holds meetings every two months to troubleshoot problems and brainstorm new strategies. Come meet a group of creative people committed to cultural change.

The third Wednesday of every month, we will meet casually (not formally in a meeting) to stay in touch and put a face to the email addresses you see among your fellow activists.

Twice a year we offer basic letter-writing training sessions. They offer tips for what to look for in an article, success stories in media activism, and practical support. Come to refresh your skills or learn for the first time.

We also give friends, family and anyone who always says they want to change the world but never finds the time to do it, a chance to effect real change. With our help, we will make it easy for them to be part of the solution, not the problem.
