Newsletter: Spring 2002: Communication Is Key

By Harriet Lessel, CSW

The need for accurate information about rape and sexual abuse was demonstrated by the results of a recent poll conducted for Lifetime Television. It found that a majority of Americans continue to believe victim-blaming rape myths. This reality supports the need for the Alliance’s Communications Committee. One major goal of the New york City Alliance Against Sexual Assault is to ensure that facts about sexual assault and abuse are available to the pulic and policy makers in order for appropriate response to be crafted in New York City. Chaired by Board member Jennifer Byron and consisting of interested individuals and Alliance staff, the committee’s purpose is to strategize the best way to communicate about sexual violence to our different audiences. For more information about this and other Board committees, contact the Alliance at 212.523.4344 or email contact-us@nycagainstrape.org.

Ms. Lessel is Executive Director of The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault. [more]

Karen Carroll-Coleman, Forensic Nurse Examiner
"When someone says 'I've been raped' the most important words in the world to say are 'I believe you'. If a survivor doesn't hear that from anyone else, she or he is going to hear it from me."
