FACTSHEET:
Restitution Legislation
The practice of requiring an individual who has harmed another to repay the victim for the harm caused has been at the heart of jurisprudence in the civilized world. In fact, throughout most of history, the concept of repayment or restitution was inseparable from principles of crime and punishment. But as the power of the state grew, and as the interest of monarchs to intervene in an effort to quell violent settlement of disputes also grew crimes against individuals became "crimes against the state."

Newsletter: January 2004: On the WebThe Alliance’s innovative e-mail and web-based “Listen Campaign” to raise public awareness, introduced at the last Quarterly Meeting, will officially launch in early January. Thanks to everyone who has participated in its creation by providing feedback, especially the Sexual Assault Awareness Month Committee. Through email and the web, this grassroots campaign will draw attention to the individual’s role in preventing sexual assault in our communities. As an important focus of the online campaign, linkages to services for victims will be posted, expanding on the information for survivors currently displayed on the Alliance website. If you are interested in helping with this campaign or seeing the beta version, contact our Web Manager at webmanager@nycagainstrape.org.
