Newsletter: January 2004: Getting the Word OutThis fall, Safe Horizon released its new awareness campaign to promote use of the citywide sexual assault hotline. The campaign has been imprinted on 3,500 bus and subway posters, and postcards and palm cards have also been printed.Elizabeth McCarthy, Senior VP of Short Term & Emergency Programs was at the Alliance’s fall quarterly meeting to comment on the campaign’s marked success. Ms. McCarthy reports the hotline has seen a huge increase in call volume since the campaign was launched: calls in September increased 132 percent, compared to the same month last year. Safe Horizon is collecting data on the callers, and shared some preliminary statistics at the meeting. To prepare for the expected increase in usage, extensive staff training was conducted, including staff of Safe Horizon’s other crime victim hotlines. The training focused on helping staff feel more comfortable asking questions to promote referral to the most appropriate services. According to Ms. McCarthy: “we are emphasizing that this is the gateway to other resources.” She also said that counselors check the Alliance’s website regularly for up-to-date information on the city’s many specialized service providers. ← previous article | next article → |
