Class DatesThe course will begin on September 12th, 2008 and will meet every Friday afternoon at the Milano New School. It will end with a weekend retreat from December 21-22. Dinner will be provided at each class.Class ParticipationThe class requires active participation and participants are expected to attend at least 13 of the 15 classes. Participants may be asked to withdraw if they fail to attend on a regular basis.Readings and AssignmentsParticipants will be expected to complete weekly class readings and listening partnership assignments. All course readings will be provided free of charge.Center for New York City AffairsThe Center for New York City Affairs is a nonpartisan institute dedicated to advancing innovative public policies that strengthen neighborhoods, support families and reduce urban poverty. The Center's original, applied research and public seminars/workshops seek to explain the politics of community change in local and state government and to define the hurdles blocking the way to stronger urban families and communities.The Center's public programs offer community leaders and other participants the opportunity to meet powerful players in and around government, and to learn about the context, the influential organizations and other factors that define the policymaking landscape in New York City and urban America. The Center's current projects include research, writing and public dialogue on Public policy and New York's immigrant families. FacilitatorThe course will be facilitated by Azadeh (Azi) Khalili. During the past ten years, Azadeh has facilitated national and international workshops on effective leadership. She appears on TV and radio speaking on health, human rights, and immigrant integration policies. Ms. Khalili previously served as the Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. Before her appointment in the Bloomberg Administration, she was one of ten Children and Family Fellows with the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Earlier, Azadeh established and led Youthbase (previously known as The HIV/AIDS Technical Assistance Project), a not-for-profit organization that worked with the New York City Department of Education to provide youth-centered HIV/AIDS education to over 400,000 high school students. Born in Iran, Azadeh holds an M.P.H. from Columbia University and was a Charles H. Revson Fellow at Columbia University. She is a member of United to End Racism and serves on the boards of the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), the New York Community Media Alliance (NYCMA) and the Steering Committee of the Annie E. Casey Foundation Children and Families Fellowship Network.Participant Selection CriteriaFifteen individuals will be chosen to participate in this course.
