Sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, the Institute for International and Cross-Cultural Psychology, the Academic Dean's Office, and the Women's Studies Minor
This conference will present and explore findings from new research on domestic violence conducted by researchers, activists, and scholars based in the New York metropolitan area. There will be ample opportunities for participants and attendees to connect, network, and discuss issues.
Session I: Policy Implications of Recent Research (10 - 11:30am) Moderator: Dr. Emily Horowitz, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, St. Francis College.
Panelists include Ted Bunch (Director, Safe Horizon's Domestic Violence Accountability Program), Phyllis B. Frank (Director, VCS Community Change Project), Dr. Richard Peterson (Research Director, NYC Criminal Justice Agency), and Michael Rempel (Director of Research at the Center for Court Innovation.
Session II: New Initiatives for Victimized Families (12noon-1:30pm) Moderator: Dr. Chris O'Sullivan Senior Research Associate, Safe Horizon
Panelists include Amy Barasch, Esq. (Executive Director, New York Family Justice Center), Johna Hanson, LMSW (Safe Families Project, The Legal Aid Society), Lori King & Kyla Levin-Russell (Researchers, Safe Horizon), Chandra Yoder (Victim Advocate, Safe Horizon),
Session III: Cross-Cultural Perspectives (2pm - 3:30pm) Moderator: Dr. Uwe Gielen, Department of Psychology, St. Francis College
Panelists include: Dr. Florence Denmark (Robert Scott Pace Distinguished Research Professor, Pace University), Purvi Shah (Executive Director, SAKHI for South Asian Women), and Dr. Susan A. Wilt (Assistant Commissioner in the Division of Epidemiology at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene & Assistant Professor, Columbia University).
Plenary Speaker: 4pm Yolanda Jimenez Commissioner, NYC Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence
