Catholics praise pope's comments on sex scandal Responded to by Jennifer L. Pass
Thank you for printing Brandon Bain's "LI Catholics Praise Pope's Comments on Sex Scandal," despite the erroneous title that flippantly refers to the criminal act of child sexual abuse as a "sex scandal".

It is important to hear a variety of voices in response to the epidemic of child sexual abuse.  In particular, it is important to know that there are individuals who are "tired of hearing it" and believe that "there'll always be new cases."  It is this apathy toward crime and the disempowerment of survivors that perpetuates such cycles of violence and fosters an environment in which sexual abuse is allowed to occur.  Additionally, making the statement, "They just won't let it die", is victim blaming and takes the responsibility away from the perpetrators, who in this case are not only adults, but also priests, individuals intended to be trusted moral leaders.

It is exactly the kind of beliefs indicated above that make it imperative for stories like this to be told, not as "a step in the right direction in repairing the Catholic church's moral standing", but to put an end to the horrifying epidemic of child sexual abuse.
