Rape Suspect Ruled Mentally Incompetent Responded to by Maria Brandt

Dear Newsday,

Though I applaud the straightforward tone of your Associated Press article "Rape Suspect Ruled Mentally Incompetent," I do wish there had been more information offered about the case. What exactly does "mentally incompetent" mean? Why is the suspect being given outpatient and not inpatient treatment? How did the victims react when they learned that their assailant would not be in custody, not even in psychiatric custody? How severe could his condition be if he is only being given outpatient treatment? Severe enough to absolve him from three accounts of rape? Something about this case doesn't sit right with me. I wish I knew more...
