Police Say Gym Teacher Had Sex With Student Responded to by Anastasia Webb
Dear New York Times Editor,

It is very apparent that in the article, ěPolice Say Gym Teacher Had Sex With Student,î that the New York Times, on evidence of the testimony of a child only, believes that there is reason to investigate and focus on the character of the identified perpetrator in this case. I am in agreement that anyone who reports a sexual assault to police, who then find reason enough to prosecute, should be respected and considered credible by the media. I am wondering then, given the punitive scrutiny applied to adult survivors, if the New York Time thinks there is a difference between the nature of the crime of rape against a child and that of an adult? In coverage of the Duke rape case, reporters focus on the victim as a black stripper who was drinking, while in this story, the focus is solely on the degree of culpability on the part of the accused. The writer seems to assume guilt on the part of Mrs. Burke while the men accused of rape at Duke retain their prestigious status in the eyes of the media.

Anastasia Webb.
